Greater Vancouver Taiwanese Community Typhoon Morakot Relief Committee

PRESS RELEASE

Leaders of the Greater Vancouver Taiwanese Community met yesterday evening (August 11) to officially form the “Greater Vancouver Taiwanese Community Typhoon Morakot Relief Committee”, as a response to the tragic events that took place in Taiwan as a result of the Typhoon Morakot. Executive committee was also formed, with Christina Chang, of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce in BC as the Chair of the Committee, Yu Wen Chen of Taiwanese Canadian Association of Canada as the Secretary General, Ruth Cheuh of the Vancouver Taiwan Presbyterian Church as the Treasurer, Jason Wang of the Taiwanese Canadian Cultural Society as Director of Media and Publications, and Kevin Chen of Vancouver Taiwanan_678 Generation as the Events Director. Also at the meeting were about 20 leaders of the Vancouver Taiwanese community. Due to the time constraint, some organization representatives were unable to attend, but it is believed more will join the Committee in the days coming.

Typhoon Morakot struck on August 8 and devastated Southern Taiwan, causing floods and mud slides, including the near complete burial of an entire village, Hsiaolin Village. Over 60 are confirmed dead, and the death toll is expected to continue to rise. It is estimated that the total damage may exceed that of the Earth Quake of September 21, 1999.

The Taiwanese community in Greater Vancouver has very close ties with Taiwan, and is tremendously concerned with the welfare of the victims of this disastrous calamity. The Committee is calling on all members of the community to disregard all differences, be they political, religious or cultural, and join together in this relief effort.

In addition to launching an immediate fundraising drive to collect donations, the Committee is also planning to have its first large scale Fundraiser, in the form of a concert, to be held at the Vancouver Taiwan Presbyterian Church located on 41st Ave. in Kerrisdale. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday August 29, 2009.

The Committee has set up an account to collect the donations, which will be sent to via the Presbyterian Church of Canada’s “Presbyterian World Service and Development” and sent to those in need in Taiwan. All donations are issued a charity tax receipt for tax deduction purposes, issued by the Presbyterian Church of Canada. There are two methods to donate:

1. Give the funds to any of the member organizations of the Committee, ensure to give your name and address as it appears on your income tax statement. The funds will be collected and sent to the Presbyterian Church of Canada, with the charity tax receipt to be sent to the donor at a later date.

2. Go to any HSBC bank and deposit your generous donations to
(HSBC) 10570-016-024730-081, Account: TCCS, ensure that you receive the deposit slip. Bring the deposit slip to the Committee, and they will ensure it is sent to the Presbyterian Church of Canada, with the charity tax receipt to be sent to the donor at a later date.
